HOUR TWO - A HIGHLY REVISIONIST SMiLE - By Jon Brian Peterson

For those of us who are lifelong Brian Wilson/Beach Boys super fans, being able to sequence our own version of SMiLE and air it on the radio is a lifelong dream come true. Special thanks to Leon Lively, Greg Wallace, Rick Garves, Paul Sineath, Wayne Self and all who helped.

Without rambling too much, (which I didn a few days ago here) I don't think that Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE represents a true picture of how it might have been released in 1967. Van Dyke Parks got Brian into the emotional state of dealing with working on it by telling him, it's not SMiLE, it's putting it together for the Live Tour in 2004. This BWPS version ended with "Good Vibrations" as the standing ovation final song climax. Anyone who knows 60's hitmaking also knows that their biggest #1 would not be buried as the last track on Side Two.

And then there's the napkin handed in to Capitol with the non-sequenced track listing in 1967. I never believed that was the 'final' sequencing... as evidenced by the LP sleeve jacket note. And why should we believe that "Our Prayer" is the definitive opener, just because we hear the BB's chattering "sounds like an intro" on the studio out takes?

So why do I think I know a better sequence? I am not a musican or an artist. Rather, a freeform DJ with 25 years experience in the art of assemblage and evolving a segue groove. I also have great familiararity with the matieral (20+ bootlegs) and pretty decent digital editing skills. SIDE ONE

1) "YOU'RE WELCOME" - It doesn't take a genius to figure out that a ditty called "Your Welcome" (To Come) into the 'World of SMilE' might make a logical opener. This has all the elements for LP set-up... atmospheric singing, interesting bells and sophomoric (ejaculation) humor. For me, 'Our Prayer' lacks context. What the hell is this? What am I getting myself into? As a radio guy, it sounds more like a "re-entry" sweeper... thus, my use of it as the Side 2 opener. There, is does has context... and also starts the first bit of my Side 2 acapella "bookending." But more on that later! (Laid track down twice in Adobe Audition... one a tad later, for slight phlanging.)

2) "DO YOU DIG WORMS (Roll Plymouth Rock)" - Part One (1:08). This song to me is the logical setup piece for H & V. I get out at the stop break, before the second section.

3) "HEROES & VILLIANS" (Smile 2-CD version 4:46). In the Cantina and all those extra goodies!

4) DO YOU DIG WORMS (Roll Plymouth Rock)" Part Two (2:22). This is the 'second movement' so I split it on both sides of H & V. It contains mainly of the same elements and could easily be part of a super long version of it.

5) "HEROES & VILLIANS" SECTIONS - Stereo Mix. (3:51). When I interviewed VDP in 1981, I asked him if there was a 45 minute version. Not quite, but with 'Roll Plymouth Rock' and this, you can certainly substancially extend it!

6) "LOOK (Song For Children)" - (2:30). Here we begin the 'Child is the Father of the Man' motiff. The bright bouncy keyboard part and grandious nautical bells also feel like a set-up to GV.

7) "GEE" - (:49). Segueing out of our H & V mega-mix... this is our last memory of that choral motiff.

8) "BARNYARD" - :(47) In the earlier H & V stereo section, we hear the BB's making childlike and very drug-induced wierd sounds. Here we do a variation on that... and continue that kind of silliness with sheep, cows and other barnyard animal noises. It's also the beginning of a set up for all the SMiLE spoken word humor... about to come!

9) "HE GIVES SPEECHES" (Brian microphone chatter fragment) - (:09). This begins my belief that there is a "working" and "art in progress" element to SMiLE. A "constuction" and "deconstruction" motiff... further amplified by "Workshop" on Side Two. This foreshadows the woodshop noises and Brian falling into his piano and microphone... still to come! (Note: Didn't use "He Gives Speeches." Didn't feel it fit well enough. Part of building a personal SMiLE is not just deciding on the sequencing, but also what NOT to use.)

10) "WINDCHIMES" - (3:04). We started the earthiness of the "Element Suite" set up with "Barnyard." You can even argue that Barnyard = Earth. Here we hit the atmosphere, as "Windchimes" = Air. (Tech Note: Volume starts rolling off in the final 10 seconds to match the low levels of "My Only Sunshine."

11) "MY ONLY SUNSHINE" -(1:35). I was really conflicted about including this. Realistically, it could have been one of Brian's "lets jam on an oldie" moments to get warmed up... and then not make the final cut on the LP. But since it was on the napkin handed to Capitol Records in 1967 and (one might argue) that the big ol' Sun could be part of the Elements, I kept it in. Not a big fan of this, but the second instrumental movement after the vocals is better... almost feeling like a low key "lull" before we ratchet it up with GV. Or put another way, it feels like 'traveling music"... like a hippie variation on "Linus & Lucy."

12) "HOLIDAYS, PART 2" - (:44). This is actually the second movement (We'll hear Part 1 on Side 2). I don't know why this fragment was hooked to the whimsical first movement... as it really is "Windchimes, Part II." Part of my belief that important songs shouldn't disappear, but themes & variations of it reappear as part of an ongoing motiff. The windchimes are vibrating and tinkling too... set off by all the good vibrations!

13) "GOOD VIBRATIONS" - (4:08). No need to comment on musical perfection!

14) "BRIAN FALLS INTO A PIANO" -(1:19) If "getting small" stoner humor is an important part of SMiLE, this absolutely needs to be included. Danny Hutton, too, handing out the drugs! ;--)

15) "GOOD VIBRATIONS- Sessions Highlight (Fragment)- (:30). A alternate fragment returns (by sneaking under BW's & group spoken vox), as part of my 'art in progress' motiff. Brian's comment at end of GV take also brings a firm close to Side One. "Really Felt Good... Let's Play It!"

SIDE TWO

1) "OUR PRAYER" - (1:04). Acapella singing kicks off this side, and ends it, too! Bookends, so to speak! In radio parlance, a "re-entry" sweeper!

2) "WONDERFUL" - (1:59). Mellow, cool, positive, vibey! Not alot on Western Industrialization and The Story of America, and that's a won-won-derful thing!

3) "BRIAN FALLS IN A MICROPHONE" mixed with "HOLDAY, PART 1" (1:58). Many say the word "whimsical" when discussing SMiLE. With this track, it goes beyond whimical into the realm of "cheesy" with the slide whistle, etc. I almost was going to dump this from the sequencing until I found the BW microphone sketch (split into two segments) fits perfectly into the two sections where the music lays out. This way, the cheeziness of the arrangement adds zip and wink-wink gusto to the "stoner humor!"

4) "VEGA-TABLES" - (Two versions and spoken word Hal Blaine promo mixed together) -(3:43). This contains the keyboard-percussion intro from the 2-CD set (for a better bridge/segue) into the 7-Inch deluxe version on the Box Set. Plus, the Hal Blaine-BW "radish humor segment" is laid on top of the "Ba-Duh-Bah" vocalese near the end. If "Vega-tables" lacks a certain gravetos, putting it next to "Holiday, Part 1" makes total sense. (Get all the silliness out of the way now.. cuz we are about to get literary again!)

5) "LOVE TO SAY DA-DA" into "COOL COOL WATER" (4:12). Mixing these two together is totally obvious... as the Elements Suite continues.

6). "I WANNA BE AROUND/WOODSHOP" - (1:07). One of the best segues on the entire LP... tension and release! The hammering and buzz saws are the 'shop noise' equivalent to the human and barnyard noises on Side One for some non-literal sound symmetry. I get out of the Woodshop early, too... at 1:07.

7). "HOLIDAYS, PART TWO" (:34). Otherwise known as "WindChimes, Part II." Identical fragment as on Side One... I wanted to re-integrate it into the Elements Suite here...fanning the flames of the Fire!

8). "THE ELEMENTS- MRS. O'LEARY'S COW (FIRE)" (2:28). Phil Spector hired Mind Gangsters... I had to include it!

9) "CHILD IS FATHER OF THE MAN" (Fragment) - (:48). A shorter fragment than on the CD. I guess my logic was that the entire track wasn't needed as CIFOTM is re-integrated at the end of Surf's Up... So this acts as a set-up teaser. (Remember, CIFOTM was first introduced on Side 1 with "Look (Song For Children.)

10) VEGA-TABLES-FADE (Backing Track Fragment). - (1:16). This instrumental piece from the Box Set is actually the second fragment... included here because of the banjo segment... which acts a perfect bridge into "Cabinessence."

11) "CABINESSENCE" into "GOOD VIBRATIONS" FUZZ BASS FRAGMENT - (4:51). One of my most creative segues. As the fuzz bass amps up on the Cabinessence fade, I do a quick cross-fade into the fuzz bass version from the GV tracking session. It seemed only natural.. and I wanted to re-integrate GV onto Side 2 in some kind of meaningful way... again, continuing an important theme & variation.

12) "SURF'S UP" (Three Versions Mixed Together) - (4:56). Since we are still instumental on the GV fragment, I start with the instrumental SU 1st Movement... into the vocal entry (first verse) of SI Piano Demo... into the second verse of the "official version." I know it sounds "high concept"... but it works!

13) "SMILE BACKING VOCAL MONTAGE" (Selected Fragments) (1:01). The final acapello bookend. also restating major themes including "The Grand Coulee Dam," Rock, Plymouth, Roll" and a "Our Prayer-like" closure Hummmm.

I did the first hour (JOHN LENNON: ROCK N ROLL'S PEACE POLITICIAN) at KPFK/Los Angeles in 1990 as my way of dealing with my ongoing grief and disbelief that such a thing could happen in the streets of his beloved NYC. The program is a "travel theme" about the host traveling cross country to Columbus OH for the first time to work at WCBE in |December of 1991. The show also features Christmas in exotic places like the Caribbean and Hawaii, and places where you might not want to be ("Christmas In Jail" and "Christmas In The Trailer Park."

The show also showcases Christmas stories from Louis Armstrong ("The Night Before Christmas"), The Pogues & Kirsty MacCall ("A Fairy Tale in New York"), and Kyle Brofkowski of SOUTH PARK "The Lonely Jew on Christmas Day," which the host relates to his first XMAS in Columbus. Being the new guy at WCBE, Peterson had to work on Christmas day and had Chinese food for lunch brought in by Radio Free Columbus "Calander Diva" Cheryl Lever (of the Jewish faith)... making his first Columbus Christmas a tad less lonely.

And in the Second Hour for our "Featured Sement"... we hear a RARE recording from the legendary WBCN Boston. The JIM CARROLL BAND recorded live at the Boston Paradise Theatre on December 1, 1980. This one's for you, Jim... We Salute you, brother!
